WINGS September, 2003

Sep 17 - I was looking over Dan Checkoway's web site for details and came across a mention he made of a couple rivet callouts he'd missed.  I checked them on my wings, and realized I'd missed them, too.  I've also heard others on the RV lists mention missing this.  So, here's the info for you, in hope you won't make the same mistake.  I also wrote to Van's and suggested that they add a note about this on that drawing, as it seems to be so easy to miss the different rivet callout.

This refers to the rivets that fasten the aileron hinge brackets to the wing.  Look closely at Drawing 10A, Detail A and B.

Here's the wrong rivet - a 470-4, the same as the others on this bracket.

It needs to be a 426-4 flush rivet.

Sep 28 - Worked on installing the landing lights and landing light lenses.  I should have worked on those lenses while it was really hot in the summer.  Marked and cut lenses to size.  Smoothed lenses & started fitting them to the wing lens openings.  I started installing the lenses, but I didn't follow the directions that came with them.  The directions said to use stranded shipping tape.  I didn't have any, so I used heavy duty clear shipping tape.  As soon as I drilled through the tape under the center hole, it broke the tape.   You really do need to use the filament stranded shipping tape for that.   Regular shipping tape is strong, but is designed to tear easily as soon as its surface tension is interupted with a nick or cut.  2.5 hr

I used the cutoff wheel to trim the lenses.  It worked well.
